Activating change in the chemical sector

Chemical products are the essential building blocks of so many consumer goods and industrial products that we rely on every day. But the production of these chemicals accounts for around 7% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By reducing emissions within the chemical industry we can make a huge impact on limiting climate change. With nearly 77% of chemical emissions occurring in upstream supply chains, being able to accurately calculate the carbon footprint of chemical products is a big step forward in enabling the chemical industry and the industries it supplies to identify, track and reduce emissions.

Encouraging chemical companies to reduce emissions

The challenge

Together for Sustainability (TfS) – a member-led initiative committed to improving sustainability standards within the chemical sector – wanted to raise awareness of its work with member companies to reduce Scope 3 emissions. This included promoting groundbreaking tools designed to streamline and standardise measurement and data sharing of carbon in chemical supply chains – the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Guideline and PCF Exchange solution. At the same time, it wanted to reach experts and senior leaders in the chemical sector and beyond to catalyse cross-industry collaboration.

A multichannel awareness campaign

The solution

By developing a multichannel awareness campaign with compelling messaging, visual assets, engaging events and a strong social and traditional media presence, we helped achieve widespread industry adoption of this important tool among leading chemical companies. Initially supporting TfS to launch the PCF Guideline in 2022 and the PCF Exchange solution in 2024, Flag provided a full suite of services including web and social media copy, designed assets, communications strategy and virtual event organisation.

The successful launch of the solution was followed by strategic media outreach that put TfS in front of a global audience of senior industry professionals. The campaign increased visits to the TfS website, driving engagement with its industry-leading tools. We continue to build TfS’ profile through creative content for social media, press releases and TfS webpages.

A commitment to collaboration

The result

TfS’ PCF Guideline is now being adopted across the chemical industry. Since its launch in 2022, the Guideline was featured in 20+ target publications and has been downloaded nearly 20,000 times. The virtual launch event for the PCF Exchange was a great success, with over 900 registrants from 35 countries, representing more than 500 companies and entities.

We have been fortunate to collaborate with Flag as our communication partner for the launch and promotion of the TfS Scope 3 emissions programme. They excelled at translating highly technical and complex issues into clear and compelling messages. Their contributions were crucial to the success of our communications strategy and campaigns.”
